Palermo
Monte Pellegrino
Mondello Tour

The guided tour of Palermo will lead you to lose yourself and fall in love with the artistic and architectural heritage of the many civilisations and peoples that have followed one another in the area. Many of these constructions have been considered Italian national monuments for years and some have become part of the UNESCO heritage. Among these it is worth mentioning:

  • The Palatine Chapel, a basilica with three aisles that is located within the architectural compound of Palazzo dei Normanni;
  • The Royal Palace or Norman Palace, formerly the residence of the king, now headquarters of the Sicilian Regional Assembly;
  • The Teatro Massimo, the largest opera house in Italy and the third largest in Europe after the Opéra National in Paris and the Staatsoper in Vienna;
  • The Cathedral of Palermo, the main place of Catholic worship in the city of Palermo;
  • The Pretoria Fountain, also known as the square of shame for the nudity of its statues, built in 1554 by Francesco Camilliani in Florence and, in 1581, moved to Piazza Pretoria in Palermo;
  • The Quattro Canti is the name of a fascinating octagonal square at the intersection of the two main roads of Palermo: the Via Maqueda and the Cassaro, now Via Vittorio Emanuele (ancient street of Phoenician origin, connecting the Acropolis and the Norman Palace to the sea);
  • The Botanical Garden of Palermo, museum and didactic-scientific institution of the Department of Botanical Sciences of the University of Palermo;
  • The Capuchin convent in Palermo dates back to the sixteenth century. In the basement there are the famous Capuchin catacombs, a vast cemetery that attracts the curiosity of many tourists with the macabre spectacle of countless corpses on display and the surreal and mysterious atmosphere;
  • The cathedral of Santa Maria Nuova in Monreale, famous for the rich Byzantine mosaics that decorate the interior. Since 3 July 2015, it is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Piazza Armerina is a town located in the middle of Sicily, renowned for the famous mosaics of the Villa Romana del Casale, a Roman structure from the late imperial period, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Other peculiarities of the Sicilian village are the ancient districts of the Old Town with medieval streets and beautiful Renaissance and Baroque buildings, such as the Palazzo Trigona, the Aragonese Castle on which stands the majesty of the Cathedral.

Also characteristic are the Four Medieval Districts of the city, one of which is the historical centre, which every year contend for the banner of the patron saint, Maria SS delle Vittorie, with the evocative historical re-enactment of the Palio dei Normanni, during the Ferragosto Armerino.

Agrigento and Valley of the Temples Tour

Birthplace of Pirandello and belonging to the family that came into possession in 1817, in 1949 it was declared a national monument. Purchased three years later by the Sicily Region, it houses in its rooms all the works, reviews, honours, books and paintings dedicated to Luigi Pirandello, who was buried here according to his wishes on 10 December 1961.

The Valley of the Temples is an archaeological area located 4 km from Agrigento, corresponding to the ancient Akragas, characterised by its exceptional state of preservation and by a series of important Doric temples from the Hellenic period. Since 1997, the entire area has been included in the list of World Heritage Sites compiled by UNESCO.

The temple of Concordia is worthy of note and it is still unknown to whom it was dedicated, but its name is documented by one of the first Sicilian historians – geographers – archaeologists. The temple of Juno dedicated to the Greek goddess with the same name, protector of marriage and childbirth, was built in the fifth century BC and burned in 406 by the Carthaginians. The Temple of Heracles, the oldest one, dedicated to the cult of the god Heracles (or Hercules) and destroyed by an earthquake, today consists of just eight columns.

The Temple of Castor and Pollux, symbol of Agrigento built to honour the twin sons of Sparta and Jupiter, of which only four columns remain.
